Automating Supplier Billing with an AWS Datamart
A regional telecommunications provider offering retail and wholesale network services needed better visibility into its supplier billing. With many upstream providers delivering cost and usage data in inconsistent formats and through different channels, the business needed a unified, automated platform to ingest, process and report on it all. Infostatus designed and delivered an automated datamart on AWS to replace a manual, spreadsheet-based process.
The challenge
- Supplier billing data arrived in many formats and through FTP, email, API and HTTP
- Staff collected, converted and compiled reports by hand, which was slow and error-prone
- The approach could not scale as new services and suppliers were added
- The business needed reliable, timely reporting for finance, compliance and customers
What we did
We built a fully automated, modular ingestion and analytics platform, delivered with infrastructure as code.
- Ingestion and ETL: Amazon S3 for landing data, with AWS Lambda, AWS Glue and AWS Step Functions handling conversion and transformation
- Storage and modelling: Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL with historical tracking for accurate point-in-time reporting
- Analytics and access: Amazon QuickSight dashboards and a custom web portal, with authentication through Amazon Cognito
- Security and operations: encryption at rest and in transit, fine-grained IAM, and centralised logging and alerting with Amazon CloudWatch

Outcomes
- Over 80% reduction in manual data-handling effort
- Many supplier formats standardised into a single schema
- Daily automated ingestion and ETL runs
- Self-service analytics through dashboards and a web portal
- Audit-ready, versioned and traceable billing data
